Description: Anemia is common in the elderly and largely under-recognized and inadequately managed. This presentation will offer information regarding the etiology of anemia and a simple approach to evaluation and management. The participants will understand that anemia is not a consequence of aging, rather a marker of underlying illness or pathology and that anemia needs to be addressed. Illustrations presented through cases will create a better understanding for the audience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop an awareness of the prevalence of anemia in the elderly.
  • Understand the etiology of anemia in the older population and the ability to perform the basic evaluation of anemia.
  • Recognize the adverse outcomes of untreated anemia in the geriatric population.
  • Understand the management of common anemias in the elderly.

T. S. Dharmarajan MD is the Vice-Chairman, Department of Medicine, Clinical Director, Division of Geriatrics and the Program Director, Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Montefiore Medical Center (Wakefield Campus) Bronx, a University Hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), Bronx, New York. He is currently Professor of Medicine, AECOM.
