Home Health Care Helpful in Reducing Hospital Readmissions

April 25, 2019

When the federal government placed regulations and pressure on hospitals to reduce their readmission rates, many hospitals were resistant. They claimed many of the problems that lead to readmissions were beyond their purview, or ability to impact. In the years since, there has been a reduction in the number of hospital readmissions and part of that is due to in-home care services.

According to information provided in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, older adults who receive at least one or two hours of in-home physical therapy can be up to 82% less likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 60 days of their discharge.

Also, according to the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, $41 billion is spent annually on hospital readmissions. By helping to reduce these rates, private insurers, individuals, and governments (state and federal) can save a tremendous amount of money on expenses that may not be necessary or possibly avoidable.
