High Social Risk Is Associated with Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Population-Based Study in Rural Ecuador

May 25, 2023

Sarcopenia is characterized by decreased muscle strength and low muscle mass.1 Increasing age, poor physical activity, and multiple comorbidities predispose to sarcopenia.2 High social risk has also been suggested as a contributing factor, but information is limited.3 Drawing on the existing database from the Three Villages Study, we examined the association between social risk and sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults living in Atahualpa, El Tambo, and Prosperidad, 3 neighboring rural villages located in coastal Ecuador.
