"Our study was sparked when we noticed that for the first time in our facility we had used more antibiotics for respiratory infections than for UTIs. We decided to look at why this was and figure out a way to decrease the inappropriate use of antibiotics for viral upper respiratory tract infection,” says Joe Boero, MD, CMD, from Park Manor Nursing Home, a recipient of the 2016 Quality Improvement and Health Outcomes (QIHO) Award for “Finding Pneumo: Antibiotic Stewardship Principles Used in a QAPI Project to Decrease Inappropriate Antibiotic Use in Respiratory Tract Infection in a Long-Term Care Facility in Northern Wisconsin-A Case Study.”
