About one in seven people residing in today’s nursing homes is under age 65. “This setting isn’t designed with these younger individuals in mind," says , Rebecca Ferrini, MD, CMD, presenter of an upcoming webinar on the topic. “We need to understand that their conditions often represent a life interrupted. This creates turmoil that we don’t tend to see in our older patients. They don’t want to be dependent on others, they’re angry at those around them, and they may act out,” says. Dr. Ferrini. She adds, “We need to understand where they come from, what their losses mean to them, what activities are likely to bring them joy, and how we can help keep them safe while maximizing their quality of life.”
