Newly updated, the Pressure Ulcers and Other Wounds CPG now includes information regarding arterial and venous ulcers, in addition to pressure ulcers, as well as the new NPUAP staging terminology.

Pressure ulcers and other wounds remain a major cause of mortality and morbidity in PALTC, affecting an estimated 2.5 million patients and costing $9.1 to $11.6 billion per year in the US. Adapted from the Society’s Pressure Ulcer CPG, the new CPG aims to facilitate the decline of new facility-acquired pressure ulcers and other wounds through proper prevention methods. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services MDS terminology (pressure ulcer) and National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) terminology (pressure injury) included. This CPG is a valuable tool for all PALTC health care providers.

The guideline is evidence-based and incorporates the revised federal guidance to surveyors on pressure ulcers (Tag F314) including:

  • Risk factors;
  • Infection;
  • Infection;
  • Treatments based on the wound characteristics; and
  • The resident’s rights to refuse one or more aspects of pressure ulcer care.

The pocket guide provides a quick reference to assist the clinician in healthcare decisions for different skin issues. Surveyor Guidance for risk factors in developing pressure ulcers will assist facilities in their care of patients with pressure ulcers. Pressure Ulcer staging for MDS and National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) definitions are included.
